Eligibility

The Alberta Education Act and School Transportation Regulation require us to provide transportation for students who meet certain criteria. Additionally, we have decided to provide transportation for students who meet other criteria. This page explains which students are eligible to receive transportation. Eligibility for transportation to and from a school often depends on the location of a student’s residence relative to the school and the school’s regular attendance area or Program of Choice attendance area. Most schools have a regular attendance area, and some schools have both a regular attendance area and Program of Choice attendance area. A school that offers only Programs of Choice (and no regular education program) has only a Program of Choice attendance area and no regular attendance area.

Eligibility

Attendance Areas

Kindergarten & Elementary Students (K-6)

A student enrolled in kindergarten or elementary school  is eligible to receive transportation if the student meets all the following criteria. The student:

  • Is enrolled in the school
  • Resides inside the City of Calgary
  • Resides inside the school’s regular attendance area or Program of Choice attendance area
  • Resides at least a certain distance from the school, as specified in our annual Fee and Rebate Schedule below.

Note: Not all communities can be served for transportation. Please inquire at your school before registering.

Junior & Senior High School Students (grades 7-12)

A parent/guardian of a student enrolled in junior or senior high school is eligible to receive a monthly Calgary Transit bus pass rebate if the student and the student’s parent/guardian meet all of the following criteria. The student:

  • Is enrolled in the school
  • Resides inside the City of Calgary

  • The parent purchases Calgary Transit bus passes directly from Calgary Transit or an authorized vendor.

Students Enrolled in Programs of Choice

A student who is enrolled in a Program of Choice may be eligible to receive transportation. Currently, students enrolled in only the following Programs of Choice are eligible to receive transportation:

  • Elementary School French Immersion
  • Elementary School Spanish Bilingual
  • Elementary School Fine Arts

A student enrolled in a Program of Choice listed above must reside in the applicable Program of Choice attendance area to be eligible to receive transportation.

Note: Not all communities can be served for transportation. Please inquire at your school before registering.

Students Outside Their Attendance Areas

A student who is enrolled in a school and resides in neither the school’s regular attendance area nor the school’s Program of Choice attendance area is generally not eligible to receive any transportation unless the student’s parent conveys the student to a pre-existing charter bus stop and a seat is available on the charter bus. Please contact your child’s school if you have questions about this option.

Note: Parents and legal guardians assume responsibility for ensuring pickup and drop-off of their child(ren) from the bus stop. Bus schedule fluctuations and unforeseen circumstances may put the student(s) at risk if they are left alone at a bus stop before or after school.

Students Outside the City of Calgary

We have entered into an agreement with Rocky View Schools to provide for the transportation of students who reside outside the City of Calgary and are enrolled in a CCSD school in Airdrie, Chestermere or Cochrane. Please contact Rocky View Schools directly to inquire about transportation eligibility for CCSD students who reside outside the City of Calgary.
